Jesus said to her,
“Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, but those who drink of the water that I will give them will never be thirsty. The water that I will give, will become in them a spring of water gushing up to eternal life”
The woman said to him, “Sir give me this water, so that I may never be thirsty again or have to keep coming here to draw water”
John 4:15
When reading this passage, I like to think of the water Jesus is referring to as a representation of fulfillment or refreshment. Like with water, when you’re thirsty – those couple of drops that enter your mouth makes all the difference. You feel rejuvenated.
Jesus mentioned that everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again. He wasn’t referring to actual physical water but something else.
In this day and age, the world will decorate things or ideas as “good” when deep down underneath the bows and the colourful wrapping paper — serves nothing but emptiness and destruction.
The things that we turn to will only satisfy us for short periods of time. Some people find satisfaction in their style of clothes, money, in their relationships, their job, other substances and desires. But what when those things disappear and you go from being high and at the top of your game to hitting rock bottom?
Do you become lost without it? Others try to find things to feel the void in their heart (I know the feeling and I’ve been there) and you constantly try to search for the answer. Overtime you won’t find joy or satisfaction, like being on anesthesia – the side-effects will wear off and you will face reality. This is what Jesus meant by “they will become thirsty again” because the need to replenish and fill that missing hole will never stop.
My favourite part of the story is how in John 4:15 the Samaritan woman (or woman at the well) asks Jesus to give her the water. This woman has been married to 5 husbands and the one she is living with now is not even her husband by law. Something inside of her changes and she realizes that there is nothing in this world that will make her feel whole, make her feel satisfied. And she hungered for something (more like someone) who could provide her with the answer!
Jesus explains:
but those who drink of the water that I will five them will never be thirsty.
John 4: 14
Again this is not a physical thing but an internal thing. Jesus comes to bring life and life to the fullest. Gone are the days where you will need to look outside but rather, fix your eyes on the source. Your peace comes from Him, your strength, joy and will to keep going comes from our mighty fortress. Unconditional love is given from the one who first loved us before we even knew what love is. Grace, mercy, wisdom and knowledge comes from the one who designs our destiny.
Most of all you will never be thirsty again because once Jesus lives in here — he doesn’t plan on leaving anytime soon!
So my question is….
where is your fulfilment coming from?
God bless xxx
